De activiteiten van het EESC betreffende de oostelijke buurlanden hebben betrekking op Armenië, Azerbeidzjan, Wit-Rusland, Georgië, Moldavië en Oekraïne. Het hoofddoel van het EESC als het gaat om de oostelijke buurlanden is om de betrekkingen met de organisaties uit het maatschappelijk middenveld in de regio te verbeteren en om deze organisaties te betrekken bij de dialoog met zowel hun nationale beleidsmakers als met de organisaties uit het maatschappelijk middenveld van de EU.

De belangrijkste samenwerkingsmechanismen met Georgië, Moldavië en Oekraïne zijn de platforms voor het maatschappelijk middenveld die een aanvulling vormen op de politieke organen in het kader van de associatieovereenkomsten van de EU met deze landen. De platforms stellen maatschappelijke organisaties uit zowel de EU als het partnerland in staat toezicht te houden op het uitvoeringsproces en hun aanbevelingen aan de betrokken autoriteiten voor te bereiden.

Aan EU-zijde bestaan deze platforms uit leden van het EESC en vertegenwoordigers van grote Europese netwerken van het maatschappelijk middenveld. Aan de kant van het partnerland vertegenwoordigen zij een breed spectrum van maatschappelijke organisaties. Het lidmaatschap van de platforms is gebaseerd op een evenwichtige vertegenwoordiging van alle belangengroepen (werkgeversorganisaties, vakbonden en diverse belangengroepen).

Het follow-upcomité Oostelijke buurlanden werd opgericht in 2004 als een speciaal EESC-orgaan dat verantwoordelijk is voor de betrekkingen met het maatschappelijk middenveld in de oostelijke buurlanden. Het follow-upcomité vergadert gewoonlijk viermaal per jaar en de leden nemen actief deel aan de activiteiten van het Oostelijk Partnerschap, zoals multilaterale platforms van het Oostelijk Partnerschap en het forum van het maatschappelijk middenveld van het Oostelijk Partnerschap.

  • The 14th meeting of the EU-Ukraine Civil Society Platform (CSP) took place on 15 December 2023. During the meeting, a debate focused on assessing the implementation of the European Commission's opinion and the state of play of the implementation of the EU-Ukraine Association Agreement.

    In addition, the CSP discussed the initiatives for Ukraine's green recovery, economic integration of Ukraine to the EU, as well as current challenges related to labour market.

    A joint declaration, prepared by both sides, was discussed and adopted.

  • The 56th meeting of the Eastern Neighbours Follow-Up Committee will take place on 9 October 2023. During the meeting, a debate will be held on the participation of Ukrainian civil society organisations in European umbrella organisations, as well as on progress made by Georgia towards EU candidate status. Furthermore, the participants will discuss current situation of Belarusian civil society in exile.

  • The External Relations Section of the EESC organised a joint meeting gathering EU and partner representatives of the Civil Society Platforms (CSPs) with Armenia, Georgia, Moldova and Ukraine on 11 September (10:30 to 18:00).

  • The 206th meeting of the Section for External Relations of the European Economic and Social Committee (EESC) took place on 31 January 2023. During the meeting, which comes nearly one year after the Russian invasion of Ukraine, a debate was held on the resilience of Ukrainian civil society and on the EU support to the country.

  • The 11th meeting of the EU-Ukraine Civil Society Platform took place on 20 April 2022. During the meeting, an exchange between authorities and members of the civil society platform was held with special focus on the unprovoked and unilateral armed aggression initiated by the Russian Federation against Ukraine on its independent and sovereign territory. A joint declaration, prepared by both sides, was discussed and adopted.

  • The 8th meeting of the EU-Georgia Civil Society Platform (CSP) was convened on 13 December 2021 via a videoconference. 

  • Representatives of the European and Georgian Domestic Advisory Groups (DAGs), set up under the Trade and Sustainable Development Chapter of the Association Agreement between the European Union and Georgia, held their 6th joint meeting virtually on 2 December 2021.
