Background

The Commission's legislative initiative aims to minimise the EU’s contribution to deforestation and forest degradation worldwide and promote the consumption of products from deforestation-free supply chains in the EU.

This initiative builds on the EU’s Communication on Stepping Up EU Action to Protect and Restore the World’s Forests, adopted in 2019, where the European Commission committed to assessing additional (regulatory and non-regulatory) demand-side measures to increase supply chain transparency and minimise the risk of deforestation and forest degradation associated with products placed on the EU market. This commitment was further reiterated in the European Green Deal, the EU Biodiversity Strategy, and the Farm to Fork Strategy.
