In line with the priorities of Finland's programme for its presidency of the Council of the European Union, Sustainable Europe - Sustainable Future, Group III held its extraordinary meeting on the topic of ‘Boosting EU competitiveness – 3 pillars for sustainable growth’ on 16 September 2019 in Helsinki, at the Auditorium in the Annex Building of the Parliament.
Our Group concentrated on the following three pillars enabling sustainable growth and thus boosting EU competitiveness:
- bioeconomy and climate-neutral Europe ;
- digitalisation ;
- infrastructure in the transport sector
The pillars are closely interlinked and all ensure sustainable growth for Europe. However, putting them in place will pose a series of challenges to be faced by all stakeholders: from farmers, forest-owners, industry, infrastructure operators, public and private investors, research and technology institutes, right down to the very end of the chain, consumers.
The main purpose of this event was to examine and debate challenges, opportunities, consequences, best practices and ways of increasing EU competitiveness. 3 panels were set up to focus on each of the pillars.
Around 130 participants were expected to take part in the conference, including EESC members from all EU Member States, business representatives, experts from the main civil society organisations represented by Group III's Finnish members, and officials and representatives of the Finnish government and Parliament.
