Third policy learning forum ''Upskilling pathways: a vision for the future''

The EESC is organizing together with CEDEFOP a Policy learning forum (PLF) on 5-6 November 2020. The event aims at bringing together governments, social partners and civil society to help each other in the definition and implementation of the Council recommendation ‘Upskilling pathways: new opportunities for adults’ adopted in December 2016. This year's PLF follows on successful similar events of 2018 and 2019 being part of a series of events aiming to create a platform for mutual learning on upskilling adults with low level of skills.

Communicating Disability Rights

What is the role of the media in raising awareness on disability rights and combating stigma towards persons with disability?
How can the Media help in portraying persons with disability in a manner consistent with a human rights approach to disability?
What can be done to enhance the voice of persons with disability in the Media?
The EESC Study Group on Disability Rights is organising a public hearing on "Communicating disability Rights" on 28 June 2019, where we will try to give an answer to these questions.

Civil Society Days 2019

The Civil Society Days 2019 will take place at a crucial moment for Europe, namely after the Sibiu Summit and the European elections and ahead of the constitution of the new European Parliament and European Commission.
Current pressures on our democratic systems are threatening fundamental values (respect for human rights, individual liberty, equality, the rule of law) and the civil society space within the European Union. The alarming consequence is an erosion of democracy and restricted civic space in several parts of the EU.
Against this backdrop and in consideration of the transformation processes the EU is facing, namely on economic, energy and ecological, social, and democratic and participatory level, this year's Civil Society Days will focus on two main pillars, Democracy and Sustainability, and will explore their links and interactions.

Implementation of the global compact for safe, orderly and regular migration

The event will focus on how the EU and its Member States can contribute to the implementation of the Global Compact for safe, orderly and regular migration. The first panel will cover the views of relevant institutional stakeholders on what can and should be done at European level. The second panel will focus on the role that social partners and civil society organisations can play in working towards achieving the compact's objectives.

Solidarity between generations: a focus on ageing workers

The Labour Market Observatory of the EESC has organised a conference entitled "Solidarity between generations: a focus on ageing workers " on the 30 April 2019, at the EESC.

10 years after the first European Day of Solidarity between Generations (29 April 2009), we looked into the concept of solidarity and cooperation between generations, for a fairer and sustainable labour market. We put the focus on the situation of ageing workers and the preconditions for them to stay active in the new world of work. That was particularly timely, as discussions contributed to the drafting of an ongoing SOC/624 opinion on "Changing world of work and ageing workers".

The European Pillar of Social Rights – Evaluation of the initial implementation and recommendations for the future

In November 2017, the EU institutions announced that the European Pillar of Social Rights (EPSR) would be an important tool for promoting upwards convergence, in both economic and social terms. The EESC is now starting to evaluate the implementation of this initiative.

To kick off this process, a public hearing will be held in the afternoon of Thursday 28 March at the EESC, to assess the legislative and non-legislative measures taken, identify gaps and propose new measures, including in the context of the European Semester.

The European Pillar of Social Rights: opportunities for the Roma Integration Strategies'

At its hearing of the 13 March, the Study Group on the Inclusion of the Roma will be discussing the European Pillar of Social Rights (EPSR) and how this can translate into a benefit for the Roma community.

The hearing will give a general overview of what the EPSR envisages for education, employment, housing and healthcare. It will then look at the possibilities and opportunities that the principles of the Pillar can bring to alter the situation of the Roma. The hearing will feature as discussion on the real consideration that the Pillar gives to the Roma and suggest ways through which the Roma can be integrated in the Pillar.

Resilient Democracy - a strong and diverse civil society

This opinion aims at promoting the value of strong civil society organisations as automatic stabilisers in our democratic systems, which are facing challenges from the rise of populist and extremist movements, distrust of the free press, authoritarian tendencies, and xenophobia. Democratic civil society organisations therefore need to be supported at all levels - local, regional, national and European.
