Food Systems Transformation to Support Climate Ambition: Opportunities for coherent & collaborative action
More than one-third of global greenhouse gas emissions can be traced back to how we produce, process, and use food, while food systems are already suffering from the climate crisis. As indicated in the IPCC report on mitigation and exemplified in the EU's Farm to Fork strategy, a more comprehensive approach to food policies is necessary to realise the full mitigation and adaptation potential from the food systems.
This side event will involve policy-makers and civil society organisations to explore the latest data on the food-climate nexus and debate opportunities and challenges of the transition towards sustainable food systems that can effectively contribute to climate mitigation and adaptation efforts.

Circular Economy, unlocking its potential to combat climate change and biodiversity loss
An inclusive circular culture offers systemic solutions for a more sustainable future as it can help redesign production, boost consumption systems and do business in an environmentally and biodiversity friendly way. This culture could enable the shift needed to think and work across climate change and biodiversity silos. To fully unlock the potential of the circular economy, we need to develop and intensify synergies across the circular economy community to capitalise on affordable and scalable solutions that can benefit the local and regional economy and increase their resilience and autonomy.
This side event organised by the European Circular Economy Stakeholders Platform Coordination Group members will invite policy-makers and circular civil society stakeholders to discuss how an inclusive circular economy can reduce waste and provide measurable impacts on climate and biodiversity protection. This COP27 side event will provide an important bridge to similar discussions planned for COP15 in December 2022.

Just transition and social dialogue to achieve ambitious climate policies that leave no one behind
A Just Transition means greening the economy in a way that is as fair and inclusive as possible to everyone concerned, creating decent work opportunities and leaving no one behind. Just transition is connective tissue that binds together climate goals with social outcomes. It is also important for all economic sectors – by no means limited to energy supply – and in urban and rural areas alike, and it is essential to build the political support for the changes that are needed. However, turning the just transition into everyday reality is clearly a tough challenge.
There’s no one-size-fits-all recipe, but there are a few ingredients that make just transition work as social dialogue in the workplace, along with respect for labour standards and human rights, and large involvement of communities. This side event organised by the EESC aims to bring together civil society organisations and policymakers to present concrete examples of just transition initiatives and analyse which are the main strengths and challenges in ongoing processes.

Sustainable Food Systems to Support Climate Ambition - placing the social dimension at the core of transitions
The intensity of the food crisis requires concerted efforts from the international community to harness its collective expertise and address the root causes of food insecurity, including climate change consequences that disproportionately affect people in vulnerable situations. Food systems should be re-designed in a holistic way to increase resilience and reduce the carbon footprint, halt natural resources and biodiversity loss, while ensuring fair economic returns for all actors and addressing the hunger affecting millions of people.
This session will invite civil society organisations from the Global South and the Global North to discuss the broader impacts of the EU food trade policies and provide recommendations to foster the mitigation and adaptation potential of sustainable food systems to ensure a socially just transition.

Resource justice and the wellbeing economy: youth calling for systemic solutions to tackle the climate crisis
This side-event organised by the European Economic and Social Committee and the European Youth Forum will explore the impacts of overconsumption on natural resources and people, and how youth can be a key driver towards resource and climate justice calling for systemic solutions to tackle the climate crisis. As youth has demonstrated the ability to shake systems in place by proposing new solutions to environmental and social challenges, youth organisations will present various proposals to ensure sustainable and production patterns reflecting the impacts on the Global South and reflect on the specific role of climate change policies.
Youth organisations and policy-makers will be invited to the table to hold a discussion on how we can collectively create a new economic model that puts the wellbeing of our planet and people above profit and growth.
