  • On 17 and 18 May, the European Economic and Social Committee hosted the 4th Conference on Plurilingualism, organised by the European Observatory for Plurilingualism in cooperation with GEM+ for European Multilingual Governance. The theme of this year's conference is "Plurilingualism and creativity: languages at the heart of Europe".

  • The EESC president's interview in "Ici l'Europe" (France 24) has allowed to clarify the role and positions of the Committee on many burning issues.

  • A large delegation from the European Economic and Social Committee (EESC), led by its president, Georges Dassis, will travel to Athens on 13 May to celebrate Europe Day (which falls on 9 May every year) as part of an initiative organised by the Lycée Franco-Hellénique Eugène Delacroix, entitled Europe Day: becoming an active citizen.

  • The EESC, home of organised civil society in Europe, had the opportunity to host the Assembly of the Economic and Social Committee of the "Grande Region" (CESGR) on Wednesday 11 May.

  • On Tuesday 10 May, the EESC president Georges Dassis participated in a conference entitled Basic income: one of the ways to increase European economic and social cohesion and escape from the current economic slump? The conference was organised by the trade union Union for Unity, in cooperation with GRASPE and Europe Solidaire, and also featured the Louvain University (UCL) professor and philosopher Philippe Van Parijs, who presented his idea on a universal basic income.

  • The inaugural meeting of the EU-Moldova Civil Society Platform (CSP) was held on 10 May 2016 at the European Economic and Social Committee, the European body representing the voice of EU's organised civil society. The participants in the first CSP meeting adopted a joint declaration assessing the state of play of the EU-Moldova Association Agreement's implementation and discussing Rule of law and good governance.     From agricultural to food policy – Towards healthy and sustainable production and consumption - 21 April 2016, The Hague

    Farmers, consumers, academics and policy-maker were among the wide range of participants at a Group III 'Various Interests" European Economic and Social Committee event in the Netherlands to examine the future of food production and consumption.

  • On 3 May 2016 Prof. Jo Coenen, Curating Director of IBA Parkstad invited Mr van Iersel, ECO Section President, Mr Palmieri, president, and Mr Haken, rapporteur of the EESC opinion on the Future of the EU Urban Agenda, to visit IBA Parkstad in Heerlen, Netherlands.

    IBA (Internationale Bau Ausstellung) Parkstad represents a remarkable illustration of the European Urban Agenda objectives, a process the EESC fully supports, to develop an exemplary operational method addressing urban-territorial challenges and revealing new economic growth potentials. IBA Parkstad can be seen as an example of the way cross-border collaboration contributes to a better understanding of the potential of cities in realising a new, vital urban economy and a socially, ecologically and spatially sustainable region.
