The 13th meeting of the EU-Ukraine Civil Society Platform took place on 3 July 2023. During the meeting, a debate focused on assessing the implementation of the seven steps outlined by the European Commission and the state of play of the implementation of the EU-Ukraine Association Agreement, as well as on enhancing the role of civil society in Ukraine's way to the EU. The Platform also discussed the challenges and possibilities for Ukraine today and in the post-war reconstruction, with special focus on green recovery, energy, environment and employment. A joint declaration, prepared by both sides, was discussed and adopted.

The EU has adopted a large number of legislative proposals to improve the functioning of the EU financial markets, and especially to complete the Capital Markets Union and the Banking Union. Well-functioning financial markets are essential to mobilise the investments necessary for the green and digital transformations, support growth and job creation, and for the strategic autonomy of the EU.

With this in mind, EU institutions systematically assess the impact of new financial legislation on investor protection, financial stability, and market integrity. However, there is not a clear roadmap on how to evaluate the impact of policies financial markets' policies on the real economy, for instance, on long-term investment.

The purpose of this hearing is to discuss on the current framework for assessment and evaluation of EU policies affecting the financial sector and how it can be improved.

The AU-EU partnership for a sustainable future

The European Economic and Social Committee (EESC) organises regular consultations of the European Union‑Africa Economic and Social Stakeholders' Network, which gathers representatives of organised civil society (employers and chambers of commerce, employees and trade unions, cooperatives, farmers' organisations, consumers' organisations, NGOs, etc.) from both continents.

The 8th meeting of the EU-Africa Economic and Social Stakeholders' Network will take place in Brussels, Belgium, on 28-29 June 2023, at EESC premises, with the participation of African Union Economic, Social and Cultural Council (AU ECOSOCC).

The economic and social effects of the COVID-19 pandemic and the hardships and challenges caused by the unjustified Russian aggression in Ukraine highlighted the importance of developing a more resilient, sustainable and inclusive EU economy. The ongoing revision of the European economic governance framework is a key element in achieving this. On 26 April 2023, the European Commission presented its long-awaited reform proposals on the EU's economic governance rules and the EESC takes this opportunity to draw up a new opinion, presenting its views and recommendations on the proposed changes.

On Tuesday, 27 June 2023, the NAT Section is organising a public hearing entitled "What next for European action on SDGs?" to feed into the exploratory opinion requested by the incoming Spanish presidency of the Council of the EU to take stock of the progress achieved on the Agenda 2030 to identify any outstanding challenges and put forward recommendations on how to enhance the impact of European policies on achieving the Agenda 2030, both within and beyond the EU. The views of the civil society organisations working on these issues will be reflected in the EESC opinion NAT/903 on the subject.
