Single European Sky, EESC warns: Commission's new proposal may not be enough.
The European Economic and Social Committee (EESC) urges the European Commission to start a new discussion to make sure the green objectives and improved performance of the air traffic management system are covered in the new legislation. The consequences of the COVID‑19 crisis for aviation should also be addressed.
The aeronautical industry is one of the EU's key high-tech sectors in the global market. The industry directly employs 500 000 people in high quality jobs (1 million adding indirect jobs) and consists of an ecosystem of large and small companies covering the entire spectrum of aeronautics. This leadership should not be taken for granted since the industry faces many challenges.
The EESC is pleading for the full and swift implementation of the Single European Sky (SES). The continuing crisis in the aviation sector calls even more for bringing European Air Traffic Management (ATM) services to an efficiency level that is comparable with global best practices. Strong European policy action is now needed for strengthening the Internal Market for aviation.
