The Department of National Minorities under the Government of the Republic of Lithuania coordinates the 2015-2020 Action Plan for Integration of Roma into the Lithuanian society. Housing remains the biggest challenge, with among others the dismantlement of the Kirtimai settlement in Vilnius which is related to cases of destruction and forced evictions. Key challenges regarding education are early dropouts and early marriages. Issues related to education are not related to unwillingness on the part of the Roma, but because the basic needs of the children are not met. The need to promote the access of Roma people to self-employment opportunities and trainings was a recurrent point throughout the country visit. This mission has confirmed the need to ensure the participation of Roma people in the post-2020 strategy, and the importance of Roma culture as an integral part of the strategy.

The country visit took place from 24 to 25 October 2019 in Lithuania.
