European Economic
and Social Committee
Statement by Luca Jahier, President of the EESC, and Isabel Caño Aguilar, Vice-President for Communication on the tragic fires in Greece
On behalf of the Members of the European Economic and Social Committee we would like to assure the people of Greece of our full solidarity.
Our deep thoughts go to the victims and the families who are mourning their losses in that tragedy.
We strongly call on the European Union to implement all possible mechanisms to support the Greek government in responding to this natural disaster.
This and other similar catastrophes hitting other countries in Europe are the consequence of climate change and a clear warning.
The EESC is currently working on an opinion "Strengthening the EU's civil protection response - RescEU" on natural disasters requested by the European Commission, it will be voted on in the Committee's October plenary.
We hereby reaffirm once again our resolve to tackle climate change and call to implement accurate measures on European and national level to protect the environment following the Paris agreements.
