On 10th and 11th March 2016, a delegation of Members TEN Section is in mission in the Balears (ES), with the objective to evaluate the islands' conversion to numerical. Welcomed by M Iago Neguereda -Regional Minister of Labour, Trade and Industry of the Government of Balearic islands- EESC Members visit three projects developed in Majorca on coastal observing and forecasting, turism and emergency.

The European Economic and Social Committee has the pleasure of inviting you to the exhibition of photographs taken  by the kids of  the Ecole de de Devoirs de l’Antenne Nord-Est du CPAS de la Ville de Bruxelles.

After having built their own photo camera and mastered the shooting and developing procedures, the kids explored their city, with a different gaze.

Better regulation for consumers?

The 18th edition of the European Consumer Day was held in Brussels on 10 March 2016.

We discussed the Better Regulation initiative, what should be taken into account by the Commission and other institutions in implementing this new strategy and how to make sure that consumers do not lose out.

The Outermost Regions Unit, in collaboration with the Directorate-General for Employment, Social Affairs and Inclusion and the European Economic and Social Committee (EESC) is organising a seminar on 9 and 10 March 2016 on employment in the Outermost Regions (ORs) which have particularly high levels of unemployment.

JOINT SEMINAR WITH THE EU-KANSAI INSTITUTE

The seminar is organized together with the EU-Kansai Institute. It aims to examine similarities and differences in the bilateral and bi-regional trade agreements each party is concluding with the United States, the TTIP and TPP agreements respectively, and to assess to what extent these negotiations will inform the future EU-Japan FTA/EPA.

In addition, one session will be dedicated to the topical issue of asylum and migration policies, and will look at similarities and differences between the two countries' approaches to migration.

The UK's future role and membership of the EU is without doubt one of the most important political issues to be debated in the next few months at both the national and European levels. Therefore, the Various Interests' Group of the EESC, chaired by its President Luca Jahier, organised a conference in Manchester on Tuesday 8 March entitled ‘The UK in the EU: What Is In It For Us?’

As part of the work done towards the drafting of opinion REX/463 The New EU Strategy on Foreign and Security Policy, the EESC has organized a hearing in order to obtain input and debate on the role of civil society in the new strategy being drafted.  Participants will include representatives from the main civil society organizations in Europe as well as academics working on the subject.  A draft Opinion will be made available which may serve as a basis for discussion.

The European Energy Union (EEU) is one of the key priorities of the European Commission. Launched in early 2015, the EEU programme has already resulted in various initiatives. Specifically, the public hearing will – from a stakeholder and expert perspective – be examining whether the governance process underlying the Energy Union programme is inclusive enough and how a wider set of participants may improve governance quality.

During the meeting, the representative of the European External Action Service (EEAS) presented information about the EU relations and cooperation with Central America. Based on the Second Annual Report, the Commission representative provided information about the implementation of the trade pillar of the Association Agreement, changes in trade flows and work of joint bodies established by the Agreement. The EU Advisory Group discussed also preparations for the next meeting with Central America under the Trade and Sustainable Development Title, as well as the ways to better communicate its activities to the Central American partners and other relevant stakeholders.
