The President of the European Economic and Social Committee visits Côte d’Ivoire

Georges Dassis, President of the European Economic and Social Committee, conducted a goodwill and working visit to Côte d’Ivoire from 27 to 31 January 2017, at the invitation of Charles Koffi Diby, President of the Côte d’Ivoire Economic, Social, Environmental and Cultural Council (CESEC). The aim of the visit was to strengthen cooperation between the two institutions.

During his visit, Mr Dassis exchanged views with the president of the CESEC on wide-ranging subjects of common interest, and discussed the topics of illegal immigration and youth employment with members of the CESEC.

Mr Dassis and Mr Diby signed a memorandum of cooperation between the Côte d’Ivoire Economic, Social, Environmental and Cultural Council and the European Economic and Social Committee.

  • Regarding the issues of illegal immigration and youth employment,

The two sides expressed their broad agreement on the challenges created by illegal immigration and the correlation between this phenomenon and youth employment policy.

The presidents of the two institutions outlined suitable measures to stem illegal immigration and reiterated the need for active solidarity from the international community, in accordance with the conclusions of the Valletta Summit of November 2015.

  • Regarding the signing of the memorandum of cooperation,

The two parties confirmed their strong commitment to consult one another in order to consolidate and coordinate their efforts within international bodies and to cooperate by pooling their efforts in order to increase the influence of each institution.

In this respect, the memorandum agreed for the duration of the term of office of the two signatories aims to establish a framework for cooperation and mechanisms for achieving the objectives set.

Mr Dassis and Mr Diby were pleased to note that their views coincided on all issues raised, and were delighted by the excellent atmosphere of cordial understanding in which their discussions took place.

Whilst in Côte d’Ivoire, Mr Dassis had time to meet representatives of the socio-professional sectors, in particular employers, trade unions and civil society.

At the end of his goodwill and working visit, Mr Dassis was received by His Excellency Alassane Ouattara, the President of Côte d’Ivoire.

Mr Dassis thanked Mr Ouattara, the government and the people of Côte d’Ivoire for the outstanding welcome and hospitality he and his delegation had received.
