L'avenir de la démocratie en Europe: on en parle à Athènes

[FR bientôt disponible] The future of democracy in Europe is being debated at the Acropolis museum in Athens, where a European conference organised by EESC president George Dassis took place on 1 and 2 March. In a room full of actively engaged participants from EU institutions, Greek government, civil society organisations and universities, George Dassis clearly made the case for a more united Europe which champions solidarity and the well- being of its citizens.

'We must, above all, fight extreme poverty and invest in youth employment, infrastructure projects, research and democracy', said President Dassis in his opening speech. From the Greek government, Labour Minister Efi Achtsioglou stressed the importance of answering the questions and taking action on issues surrounding democracy in Europe.

As a side event to the conference, George Dassis received an award from the Greek Economic and Social Council (ESC) for his commitment to and support of social dialogue in Europe. ESC President Georges Vernikos said it was extremely fitting to explore future paths for democracy in Europe in the place where democracy was first born.
