The effective implementation of a sustainable development strategy with clear inter-linkages between the social, environmental and economic pillars requires a renewed sense of urgency, ambition, policy coherence and accountability. The transition to a green economy is an integral part of this process, but it is also only a first step. The green economy should be viewed as an opportunity to create new economic models centred on respect for the environment, resource efficiency and social equity. Within this context and based on both the work of the EESC to date and on the discussions in Brussels on 2 May 2012, the following are recommended:
- Investing into an effective long term sustainable development strategy
- Adopting collective responsibility for the future
