EL, USA ja Kanada jagavad demokraatia, inimõiguste ning majandusliku ja poliitilise vabaduse väärtusi ning neil on kattuvaid välispoliitika ja julgeoleku muresid. USA ja Kanada kuuluvad ELi peamiste kaubanduspartnerite hulka ja on ühtlasi partnerid rahvusvahelise õiguskorra kujundamisel. Atlandi-ülesed suhted toimuvad tänapäeval uues keskkonnas ja on silmitsi kasvavate probleemidega. Leiame, et kodanikuühiskonna kaasamine sellesse suhtesse pakub garantiid, et Atlandi-ülesed suhted suudavad reageerida avalikkuse ootustele ja aidata tõhusalt kaasa vastastikuselt kasuliku koostöö kujundamisse.

ELi ja Kanada laiaulatuslik majandus- ja kaubandusleping ning strateegilise partnerluse leping sõlmiti 30. oktoobril 2016. aastal. Ootame pidevat kodanikuühiskonna osalust nimetatud lepingute täitmises. Läbirääkimised ELi ja USA Atlandi-ülese kaubandus- ja investeerimispartnerluse (TTIP) üle on praegu seiskunud. Kuid TTIP läbirääkimised aitasid tugevdada sidemeid ELi ja USA kodanikuühiskonna vahel ja määratleda kodanikuühiskonna vaateid selle kohta, kuidas tulevane ELi ja USA kaubandussuhe peaks välja nägema. Neid saavutusi ei tohiks lasta kaduma minna. Meie Atlandi-üleste suhete järelevalvekomitee loodi 2014. aasta septembris volitustega jälgida Atlandi-üleseid sidemeid kodanikuühiskonnaga, luues korrapärase dialoogi ja konsulteerimise küsimustes, mis on seotud suhetega USA ja Kanadaga.

Transatlantic relations remain strong and important even though they have recently had a very bad press. Business, both in the EU and the US, has a role to play in overcoming current difficulties. Together, we can effectively promote a positive transatlantic agenda and help to fight stereotypes and misinformation. These are just some of the conclusions of the debate with Susan Danger, CEO of the American Chamber of Commerce to the EU. The debate took place during the Employers' Group meeting on 11 July 2018.

The role of trade as a generator of growth and jobs is undeniable, but public perception of the further liberalisation of trade is getting worse and citizens' concerns must be addressed far more effectively than before. This was one of the conclusions of the conference on "Strengthening European Growth and Competitiveness: Proactive Trade Agenda – NOW!" that took place in Helsinki on 26 October.
