The EESC issues between 160 and 190 opinions and information reports a year.
It also organises several annual initiatives and events with a focus on civil society and citizens’ participation such as the Civil Society Prize, the Civil Society Days, the Your Europe, Your Say youth plenary and the ECI Day.

The EESC brings together representatives from all areas of organised civil society, who give their independent advice on EU policies and legislation. The EESC's326 Members are organised into three groups: Employers, Workers and Various Interests.
The EESC has six sections, specialising in concrete topics of relevance to the citizens of the European Union, ranging from social to economic affairs, energy, environment, external relations or the internal market.

The internet and digital technologies have been transforming our way of life. They play an essential role in economic and social life, for instance to support vital energy, health, government and financial services. The digital economy already generates over one fifth of GDP growth in the EU and most Europeans buy online each year.
On 19 December, the EESC president Georges Dassis met Maurizio Massari, Italy's Permanent Representative to the European Union since 1 June 2016.
They shared the view that the EU would again have a lot on its plate in the coming year, but more particularly that it was not on the right track: the Member States had lost sight of the shared values that underpinned the European project and the reasons why they had chosen to come together. There was a lack of solidarity between them, and in several Member States, an erosion of civil rights.
The European Union has attained a very high level of security and safety in civil aviation but that shouldn't encourage it to relent in its efforts....
