Screening «'Fire at Sea' » : Lampedusa and the European migrant crisis

On 21st June 2016 the European Economic and Social Committee, in cooperation with the United Nations, the International Organization for Migration and the Italian cultural institute in Brussels, organised the screening of 'Fire at Sea' ('Fuocoammare'), the award winning film-documentary set on the island of Lampedusa, a frontline in the European migrant crisis.

The film was introduced by HE Vincenzo Grassi, Italian ambassador of Italy to Belgium, Mrs Deborah Seward, Director of the UN Regional Information Centre for Western Europe, Mr Eugenio Ambrosi, Regional Director of the International Organization for Migration's office to the EU and Mr Gonçalo Lobo Xavier, Vice President of the European Economic and Social Committee. In his speech Mr Lobo Xavier underlined that refugees and migrants have been at the heart of the EESC's work over the last year, most notably through its round of fact-finding missions resulting in a set of specific recommendations to EU policy makers (http://www.eesc.europa.eu/?i=portal.en.refugee-crisis).
