Implementing SDGs - civil society in action

In the context of the third anniversary of the adoption of the UN 2030 Agenda, the European Economic and Social Committee invites you to a public debate where we will explore how the EESC is working towards implementing the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in practice – both with civil society, and within the Committee itself.

The SDGs can be implemented both as top-down goals, with governments and institutions providing the driving force, and as bottom-up initiatives by non-state actors and civil society. As a representative voice for civil society at a European level, the EESC is ideally placed to support both. The work, however, doesn't stop with just supporting action for the SDGs – the Committee strives to practice what it preaches.

On 28 September, the Sustainable Development Observatory (SDO) of the EESC will:

  • look at how SDGs can be used to promote transparency in governance,
  • present some examples of how specific SDGs are supported - both for civil society, and within the Committee - and
  • explore the next stages for civil society's role in the SDGs.

The EESC is also delighted to have the Italian economist and Co-Chair of the UN Secretary General’s “Independent Experts Advisory Board on Data Revolution for Sustainable Development” Professor Enrico Giovannini, and former Commission Director-General for Environment and current Senior Advisor to the European Political Strategy Centre (EPSC) dealing with Sustainable Development, Mr. Karl Falkenberg as keynote speakers for this public debate.
