Achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) requires more than political commitment, says the European Economic and Social Committee. Increased investment, especially by the private sector, is needed to address current economic, social and environmental challenges. The Committee therefore advises the EU and its Member States to adjust their investment and tax policies to enhance growth prospects, and thereby private sector contributions, to accomplishing the SDGs.

El Comité Económico y Social Europeo (CESE) está profundamente preocupado por la creciente inadecuación, constatada en la COP25, entre las respuestas políticas y la situación de emergencia climática. A falta de señales claras de una mayor ambición por parte de los principales contaminadores —pese al continuo aumento de las emisiones—, el CESE espera que la UE asuma el liderazgo y cumpla su promesa de un crecimiento que aporte más de lo que consume.

La digitalización ofrece múltiples beneficios a las pequeñas y medianas empresas (pymes), ya que les permite impulsar su competitividad, ampliar su acceso al mercado y mejorar las relaciones con sus clientes. En un Documento informativo aprobado en su pleno de diciembre, el Comité Económico y Social Europeo (CESE) considera necesario apoyar la transformación digital de las pymes con medidas adaptadas a las necesidades específicas de los distintos tipos de empresas.

Representantes de organizaciones de la sociedad civil europea y chilena organizaron una videoconferencia el 27 de noviembre, ante la imposibilidad de celebrar la cuarta reunión de su Comité Consultivo Conjunto dadas las circunstancias actuales. En dicha ocasión, los miembros del Comité Consultivo Conjunto (CCC) aprobaron un comunicado en el que lamentan la situación social y política en Chile.

On 22 November, participants in the 17th regional seminar of ACP-EU economic and social interest groups adopted a declaration highlighting the potential of the blue economy as a key factor for development in many eastern and southern African countries. The event, hosted by the EESC in Mauritius, was also an opportunity for civil society representatives to call for a greater role for civil society in the negotiation of Economic Partnership Agreements and bilateral Sustainable Fisheries Partnership Agreements (SFPAs) and to acknowledge the role played by African and EU economic and social groups in the development of infrastructure.

EESC conference warns against fragmentation of the Single Market and calls for upskilling Europe's work force

An EESC conference on the adoption of Industry 4.0 technologies discussed the most pertinent issues that will shape the medium to long-term future of Europe. It particularly looked at the future of manufacturing and service industries and the necessary changes in our society. Moreover, it reflected on strategic options for Europe moving forward.
