Following the recommendations of the EESC own-initiative opinion on Youth Engagement on Climate and Sustainability*, the EESC will host the first round table bringing youth climate activists and representatives of youth organisations together with high-level EU decision-makers to discuss EU policies on climate and sustainability. The aim of the round table is to make recommendations on EU climate action and to ensure follow up to its implementation by youth organisations.
The first Youth Climate and Sustainability Round Table will take place on Tuesday 13 July, from 10 to 11 a.m.
European Commissioner for Climate and executive vice-president, Frans Timmermans, will take part in this first Youth Assembly, in a direct open dialogue, enabling youth representatives to give input on crucial issues related to climate action.
The event will take place fully online, bringing together the executive vice-president of the European Commission, Frans Timmermans, and up to 10 young climate activists. It will be chaired and moderated by the EESC's vice-president for communication, Cillian Lohan.
The event will also serve to explore the possibility of setting up a permanent structure for Youth Round Tables, which could be organised twice a year, ensuring rotation and inclusive representation of invited or nominated youth activists. The EESC would act as facilitator, hosting and contributing to those Round Tables.
The live event will be webstreamed not only on this dedicated EESC webpage but also on the EESC's social media channels (Facebook account).
* Point 1.3 of the EESC own-initiative Opinion Towards structured youth engagement on climate and sustainability in the EU decision-making process (NAT/788) proposed "the establishment of Youth Climate and Sustainability Round Tables to be hosted by the EESC in collaboration with the European Commission and the European Parliament".
