To mark the 11th EU Anti-Trafficking Day, the Global Action against Trafficking in Persons and the Smuggling of Migrants (GLO.ACT), together with the European Economic and Social Committee, will host a reception to launch its “Hear their voices. Act to protect.” exhibition. The key objectives of the reception and exhibition are to support the European Union in raising awareness on trafficking in human beings, increasing the exchange of information, knowledge and best practices as well as highlighting why victims need to be placed at the centre of any strategy against human trafficking.

ECO workshop in the framework of the European Week of Cities and Regions organised by the Committee of the Regions

The ECO Section of the European Economic and Social Committee organises a workshop on "Digitalization – the Future for Cities?" inviting three cities to participate: Paris, Tallinn, and Jun. The aim of this workshop is to discuss the cities’ growing role in the world’s undeniably changing environment. This year, specific focus will be given to modern concepts (technology, innovation, digitalisation etc.) which are rapidly gaining more and more importance in city regions.  These three cities have proven examples that in several areas – such as transport, education, culture, e-governance, e-democracy and so on – digitalisation has significant social, environmental and economic added value.

Joint conference with the European Commission

The LMO and the European Commission are jointly organising a conference on "Intergenerational fairness and solidarity in Europe" on 10 October. On this occasion, the 2017 Employment and Social Developments in Europe (ESDE) Review prepared by the EC will be launched. Discussions will tackle issues such as the labour market-related problems that younger generations are facing today, the need for adequate and sustainable pensions and the role of civil society in ensuring fairer labour markets for all.

Visibility of disability everywhere

2017 marks the 20th anniversary of the European Disability Forum (EDF). Founded in 1997, the EDF has grown into a European disability movement with representation in all European Union (EU) Member States and beyond. The EDF has been helping people with disabilities and their representative bodies to come together and speak with one voice. Together with our members and partners, we are fighting for a more inclusive society with equal opportunities for everyone.

Digitalisation and innovation: opportunities and challenges

How to make digitalization a success? What should be done in order to make sure digital innovation creates decent jobs and improves working conditions? These are the questions that the Workers’ Group had on the agenda for its meeting in Tallinn on 6 October 2017, which was dedicated to digitalisation and its implications for working people.

The setup could not have been chosen more appropriately, as Estonia is considered to be the EU country most advanced in digitalisation and very open to ICT innovation, keen to put new ideas into practice very rapidly. ...

A conference for DT staff

On Friday 6 October, from 9.00-13:00, the Directorate for Translation of the EESC/CoR will be organising a conference for its staff entitled Quality Under the Lens, with the aim of throwing new light on the subject of translation quality.
The conference will aim to bring fresh perspective to the concept of quality in translation, and spark debate, discussion and interest in translation quality assurance among participants.

El Comité Económico y Social Europeo (CESE) celebrará su Noveno Encuentro de la Sociedad Civil Organizada Unión Europea – América Latina y el Caribe en la Ciudad de Panamá los días 3 y 4 de octubre de 2017. El encuentro se celebrará en el marco de la preparación de la Novena Cumbre de Jefes de Estado o de Gobierno de la Unión Europea, América Latina y el Caribe y permitirá desarrollar el diálogo entre las organizaciones de la sociedad civil de la UE y ALC, fomentar el refuerzo de estas organizaciones y poner de manifiesto el punto de vista de la sociedad civil organizada ante los jefes de Estado.

The European Economic and Social Committee (EESC) and Serbia will hold the 5th meeting of their Civil Society Joint Consultative Committee (JCC) in Belgrade, Serbia. This civil society platform between the EESC and civil society in Serbia was established within the institutional framework of the EU-Serbia Stabilisation and Association Agreement (SAA) in order to allow civil society organisations on both sides to monitor the country's accession negotiations. It is also a platform to discuss issues of common interest and to inform the public at large of the challenges ahead during the accession period. Besides the current state of play in EU-Serbia relations and the accession process, main topic of the 5th JCC meeting is: Environmental issues in the areas of energy and transport in Serbia - How to mitigate economic and social impact of industrial pollution and climate change. A common declaration of the JCC will be issued after the meeting.
