Since February 2011, the EESC follows up its relations with Russian civil society through the Russia Follow-up Committee, established with the aim of developing and maintaining relations with Russian civil society and enhancing civil society's contribution to the EU-Russia relations.

Support for people-to-people contacts is one of the five guiding principles for EU-Russia relations agreed by the EU foreign ministers and the EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Federica Mogherini, in March 2016. Since then, the EESC has renewed its contacts with the Civic Chamber of the Russia Federation, its official Russian counterpart, and continues to work with the EU-Russia Civil Society Forum through annual joint seminars and other activities.
