The EESC loves European cinema

On 23 October the premiere of the film Cold War by Paweł Pawlikowski (Oscar for IDA in 2015 and Best Director award at Cannes in 2018) was held in Brussels' Centre for Fine Arts, known as BOZAR. The EESC was a co-partner for this event, organised in tandem with the European Commission (Creative Europe), the European Parliament (Lux Film Prize) and BOZAR. Five hundred people came to watch the film. Opening the event on behalf of the EESC, Isabel Caño, the Committee's Vice-President for Communication, stressed that culture was essential for civil society, particularly dialogue between different cultures. The screening was followed by a debate with Ewa Puszczyńska, creative producer at OPUS FILM, and moderated by Robert Sołtyk, former correspondent of Polish daily Gazeta Wyborcza, about freedom of expression and creativity under totalitarianism, with the most important conclusion being that "culture crosses borders faster than people".(ehp)
