EESC President Luca Jahier and Communication Vice-President Isabel Caño Aguilar issue statement on tragic fires in Greece

On behalf of the Members of the European Economic and Social Committee we would like to assure the people of Greece of our full solidarity.

Our thoughts are with the victims and the families who are mourning their losses in this tragedy.

We strongly urge the European Union to implement all possible measures to support the Greek government in responding to this natural disaster.

This and other similar catastrophes afflicting other countries in Europe are the consequence of climate change and are a clear warning.

The EESC is currently working on an opinion on natural disasters at the request of the European Commission. Entitled Strengthening the EU's civil protection response RescEU , it will be voted on at the Committee's October plenary.

We hereby reaffirm once again our resolve to tackle climate change and call for targeted measures to be implemented at European and national level to protect the environment in line with the Paris agreements.
