The European Economic and Social Committee (EESC) is pleased to announce that a Public hearing on the Application of State aid rules for compensating the provision of services of general economic interest will be held on 10 May 2017 from 9.30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the headquarters of the EESC, 2 rue Van Maerlant - 1040 Brussels, Room VMA 3.

The main objective of the hearing is to brainstorm on the challenges and opportunities arising from the current State Aid rules for services of general economic interest.

The European Economic and Social Committee (EESC) has opened its doors to the general public
between 10 a.m. and 6 p.m.

This year, the EESC has focused on the future of  Europe -  while commemorating the  60th anniversary  of the Treaty of Rome – and talked about what the EU has achieved over the last 60 years : benefits of the citizens including free movement, single currency, research and innovations, environment, etc. and challenges for the future.

The Committee has showcased its work on economic and social policy for the European Union, its work on sustainable development and its efforts to support participatory democracy in Europe and throughout the world.

Implementation of legal migration legislation

The EESC contributed to the Fitness Check of Legal Migration by collecting the views of the organisations represented within the EESC and other civil society organisations (using a questionnaire and fact-finding missions in selected Member States and this hearing).

The purpose of the hearing was to discuss possible ways of streamlining the current EU framework for the sake of better management of legal migration flows and better alignment of legal migration policy to the economic and social needs of the EU.

A better life in rural areas

From Cork 2.0 Declaration to concrete actions

On 9 November 2016 the EESC and CoR organised a conference on balanced territorial development entitled "Cork+20: leaving rural areas behind is no longer an option". At stake was the European Commission's new rural development strategy, which would normally have to be inspired by the new Cork 2.0 Declaration that has been co-signed by stakeholders at the Cork conference on 5-6 September 2016.

Now is the time to put the Cork 2.0 Declaration into action.

The EESC opinion is the organized civil society's contribution to the follow-up of the Conference. At the public hearing on 3 May we  discussed concrete actions for implementing the measures of the declaration. The trend towards a systematic prioritarization of urban areas across the whole set of EU sectoral policies must be reversed!

EU development partnerships and the challenge posed by international tax agreements

In recent years, a discussion has unfolded on international tax agreements in relation to EU partnerships with developing countries. As a contribution to the debate, the EESC is currently drafting an opinion in which it will examine the arguments presented in recent studies on capital flows and Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) out of and into developing countries, and will look at the coherence between EU development and investment policies. Furthermore, the opinion aims to further the dialogue between European Commission and the Member States regarding double taxation agreements, investment and development policy objectives.

EESC/CCMI conference in Malta Digital Europe and Industrial Change

The EESC's Consultative Commission on Industrial Change has drawn up several opinions on the paradigm of digitalisation. These opinions contained recommendations for the European Institutions and public authorities in general. The conference to be held in Malta on 21 April 2017 will provide an opportunity for passing on these recommendations again so that they can be taken on board and swiftly implemented by the public authorities.

Breaking barriers together for autism – Let’s build an accessible society

The exhibition focuses on an accessible society for autistic persons. Pictures were taken by three photographers from the UK, Poland and Luxembourg, all aiming to help people understand what accessibility means for autistic persons and what kind of obstacles they face in their everyday life. Ultimately, the exhibition also aims at celebrating human diversity and at triggering a reflection on how to create the conditions for better inclusion for all in our community.

ECI DAY 2017: I participate!

The ECI DAY 2017 focused on the individual involvement of citizens and their active role in policy shaping. It was organised in the context of the 60th anniversary of the Rome treaties, the first treaty to talk about European citizenship, in order to show all the positive developments of the concept and a number of new tools to involve citizens. The theme "I participate!" was to underline the importance of citizens' personal involvement in building up a comprehensive democratic system in the EU.
