Statement by
Luca Jahier, EESC President, ahead of the International Labour Day

Europe is still troubled by high levels of unemployment, affecting in particular young people. The risk of social exclusion and poverty has never been so high and the problem of the working poor undermines social progress. When you add the unresolved migration crisis and the low levels of trust in democratic institutions, citizens might feel lost and fear for the worst. On International Labour Day, however, we need to look at the glass half full, rather than the one half empty. Let's not forget that Europe is home to the world's most advanced welfare systems and the European Social Model is a success story. It has proved its resilience during the extremely harsh economic, financial and social crisis that hit Europe in 2007.

Enrico Letta, former Italian Prime Minister and MEP, conveyed an inspiring message, giving full support to Mr Jahier in his new function.

Today, 75 years ago a group of Jews in the Warsaw Ghetto began the uprising against the Nazi which lasted 27 days. Today, we remember the heroism and sacrifice of those who chose to resist against the impossible odd to die in dignity and save the human spirit.

At the opening of the EESC plenary, today, as newly elected president of the EESC, I encouraged all members to wear their yellow pin to remember.

Today, members of the European Economic and Social Committee have entrusted me with the leadership of the organisation for the next two and half years. It is a great honour for me to serve the Committee, which I consider to be the home of civil society, the soul of the European project.
