Study on the recent evolutions of the Social Economy in the European Union

BACKGROUND

The study on the recent evolutions of the Social Economy in the European Union will have two principal objectives:

1) To clarify the concept of the Social Economy in the EU, with a particular emphasis on changes in concepts and definitions since the economic and financial crisis,

2) To provide a quantitative and qualitative overview of the state of the social economy in the 28 Member States of the EU.

Over the last few years, new dimensions and concepts relating to the social economy have emerged (the economy of the common good, the collaborative economy, the circular economy, enterprises with social impact, social enterprises, the social and solidarity economy, etc.). Moreover, there has been considerable evolution in the national legislative framework in the Member States. Significant developments have also taken place in terms of the weight of the social economy (total employment, presence in different economic sectors, market share, total turnover, types of enterprises, etc.). It should be noted that the EESC commissioned a study entitled 'The Social Economy in the European Union' wich was published in 2012 (http://bookshop.europa.eu/en/the-social-economy-in-the-european-union-pbQE3112784/). Within this context, the new study would review the evolutions in the social economy terms of concepts, quantitative and qualitative data.

Languages/geographical area

The study should be carried out in English and cover the 28 Member States of the EU (UK included).
