To ensure economic progress Europeans need more and better Europe

For the EESC, European added value must be at the centre of economic decision-making within the debate on the future of Europe

"EU governance needs a common sense of purpose that goes beyond technical approaches and measures. It is primarily a matter of political will and a shared vision of Europe's future." That is how Joost van Iersel, president of the ECO section in the European Economic and Social Committee (EESC), summarises the EESC's position on the future of the European economy.

Member States must find an equitable and balanced formula, urges the EESC

Multinational companies are subject to different tax rules across the European Union. This, together with the use of aggressive tax planning results in lower tax revenues for EU Member States, which affects public revenue, and therefore – ultimately – European citizens.

More proportionality in the banking regulation is needed, in favour of small and non complex banks

EESC member Daniel Mareels, rapporteur on banking and capital market issues, participated in a debate on "EU Banking Policy and Proportionality" in relation to the 2016 banking reform package. The organisers were pleading in favour of more proportionality in the banking regulation, to bring small and non complex banks on an equal footing. The debate also showed that it is a very difficult and complex issue. Furthermore, the situation in Europe is not homogenious, which makes it probably even more difficult to obtain concrete results.

Participatory Approaches and the EUSDR - Czech National Day of Participation

International Tax Dispute Resolution

International Fiscal Association (some 13,000 members worldwide) organised a regional Nordic meeting on mutual agreement procedures and dispute resolutions in the tax area. As rapporteur of ECO/420, I was invited to present our work and opinion on Double Taxation Dispute Resolution Mechanisms.
