More proportionality in the banking regulation is needed, in favour of small and non complex banks

EESC member Daniel Mareels, rapporteur on banking and capital market issues, participated in a debate on "EU Banking Policy and Proportionality" in relation to the 2016 banking reform package. The organisers were pleading in favour of more proportionality in the banking regulation, to bring small and non complex banks on an equal footing. The debate also showed that it is a very difficult and complex issue. Furthermore, the situation in Europe is not homogenious, which makes it probably even more difficult to obtain concrete results.

The event “EU Banking Policy and Proportionality” took place on 6 June 2017 in Brussels. It shed light on the issue of proportionality in the framework of the banking reform package  proposed by the European Commission in November 2016. The event was organised by Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung (FES), Deutscher Sparkassen und Giroverband (DSGV) and Deutscher Städte- und Gemeindebund (DStGB)

The EESC very much welcomes the Commission’s package of proposals and hopes that it will contribute effectively to complementing the work done after the crisis to reform the financial sector. The Committee welcomes the underlying holistic and integrated approach and believes that the proposed measures will undoubtedly help strengthen Europe’s prudential and resolution framework for banks.
