This hearing's conclusions will feed directly into the study group work on the Committee's opinion on 'Rethinking education'.
The aim of this conference was to provide an invaluable and unique opportunity to review and assess Ireland's journey through the past 40 years of EU membership and to discuss important issues such as: "The costs and consequences of a non-Europe", "Ireland as an example of how to cope with the challenges posed by the financial crisis", plus a range of various other topics concerning the CAP reform, the future of European farming and the environment, within the context of the negotiations on the MFF.
The members of the study group preparing the opinion on EU Arctic Policy to address globally emerging interests in the region – a view of civil society organised a public hearing on 31 January 2013 in Rovaniemi, Finland to discuss with the representatives of the civil society the EU's interests and priorities in the region which wins emerging interest among the global actors, in such areas as energy, transport, with serious consequences for the environment and the inhabitants.

On Tuesday, 29 January 2013, the Section for the Single Market, Production and Consumption organised a Public Hearing in the framework of the elaboration of its own-initiative opinion on "The internal market and State aid for the regions". The opinion aimed to put forward a new proposal to update the current reference model and make the system of regional aid more effective and coherent. The purpose of this public hearing was to ensure the direct involvement of civil society organisations in support of the Committee's stated aims.
The EESC organised a conference on "Mobilising European SMEs policy for Malta: Lessons learned, current challenges and future opportunities" in Malta, at the Representation of the European Commission in La Valetta on 25 January 2013. Supporting SMEs is, in the EESC's view, one of the highest priorities to exit the crisis and recover economic growth. It is therefore important to back SME initiatives aiming at promoting entrepreneurship and creating a friendly business environment for them.
