    The extension of the continental shelf beyond 200 nautical miles: an asset for France The 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea, «a true constitution of the oceans», and more precisely Article 76 thereof, gives coastal states the possibility to extend their continental shelf beyond 200 nautical miles. Thus, France, thanks to its Overseas Territories, can expect to expand its sovereign rights over the natural resources of the seabed and subsoil by approximately 2 million km2.

    At a time when EU citizens' trust in the European Union has reached an all-time low of 31% and concerns about unemployment and the economic situation dominate the public debate, it is essential to provide a response which is not nationalism or populism but European action. At its 498th plenary session, the European Economic and Social Committee adopted its "Action Plan for Europe". The tangible steps and proposals contained in the action plan are based on three pillars which address the shortcomings of the European Union as it currently operates:

    As every year the CES Luxembourg and the EESC jointly participated in the Europe Day on 10 May 2014 in Luxembourg (Place de Clairefontaine). On that occasion EESC President Henri MALOSSE gave a speech in the framework of the opening ceremony. In addition he took part in a round table on the EESC's key recommendations on the future of the EU.
