Summary of the initiative
Name of Private Regulator:Conseil Européen de la Construction d'appareils Domestiques - European Committee of Domestic Equipment Manufacturers (CECED)
Objective(s):On 22 October 1997, the Conseil européen de la construction electrodomestique (CECED), notified an agreement ("the agreement") dated 24 September 1997 committing some of its members to cease production and imports of several models of washing machines. CECED was applying for negative clearance or, alternatively, an exemption under Article 85 of the EC Treaty. The agreement concerns the market of private washing machines that are used by households to wash textiles for private use. The EEA appears as the relevant geographic area of the market. The manufacturers that have signed the commitment hold around 90,5% of the EEA market, which is relatively fragmented. Imports in the EEA account for 5 to 7% of final sales. The agreement had a sunset clause 2001.
