23/2018The European Economic and Social Committee (EESC) has used an own-initiative opinion to call for sufficient funding resources to be put in place for implementing the European Pillar of Social Rights. Adopted at its plenary session on 19 April 2018, the opinion calls for improvements in the Member States and a robust commitment in terms of budget, investment and current spending to make the Social Pillar a reality.

The EESC presents measures to avoid the severity of austerity in the future and to mitigate the negative effects of previous crisis management
Future crisis management should strive for a better balance between fiscal and social objectives to avoid adverse effects on the economic capacities, labour markets and social protection systems of the countries concerned. Instead of restrictive austerity, the EU institutions should in future crisis situations implement policies in pursuit of economic cooperation, growth and solidarity.

The European Economic and Social Committee (EESC) disagrees with the European Commission's proposal for an overall broadly neutral fiscal stance in 2018, advocating a moderate positive fiscal stance of around 0.5% of GDP instead.

On 30 November 2017, the Siauliai Chamber of Commerce, Industry and Crafts, in partnership with the European Commission, Siauliai District Municipality, Siauliai University and the EESC, held an international conference under the heading "Globalisation and Economic Patriotism: Dilemmas, Challenges and Possibilities" in Siauliai, Lithuania. Nearly 200 representatives from business, science, governmental bodies, local municipalities, social partnerships and other institutions attended the event. The European Economic and Social Committee's Employers' Group delegated three members of the group to the conference: Janusz Pietkiewicz, István Komoróczki and Pietro Francesco De Lotto.

"The EU policy on political and economic cohesion is undoubtedly one of the most important factors in bringing citizens closer to the vision of European integration", declared Georges Dassis on 4 October, at the signing ceremony where he officially joined the Cohesion Alliance, an initiative undertaken by the Committee of the Regions alongside territorial associations aiming to advocate for a strong EU cohesion policy.
