The European Union has now entered a new decade, the 2020s, in which it needs to bring about profound transformations if it is to achieve its environmental and social goals. The Green Deal has the ambition of making Europe the world’s first climate-neutral continent by 2050 – the greatest and most urgent challenge and opportunity of our times.
However, in order to rally to the challenges we are facing, it is absolutely essential that we look beyond our borders, for, no matter where we live, the challenges we face remain global: climate change, demographics, digitalisation, poverty eradication and security. And failure to address these challenges in one region of the world directly impacts all others, which means that a simplistic “my nation first” narrative will inevitably fail us all.
