Thank you note
On behalf of the EESC NAT Section and Sustainable Development Observatory Secretariat we would like to thank everyone who took the time to answer the survey on "The European Climate Pact".
We have received valuable contributions which were analysed and shared with the Rapporteurs of the EESC Opinion and their Experts.
Thank you again for your valuable contributions. For any question you may have, please sdobservatoryeesc [dot] europa [dot] eu (subject: EU%20Climate%20Pact%20-%20survey) (email us).
(Please note this survey has now been closed. For any question, sdobservatoryeesc [dot] europa [dot] eu (subject: EU%20Climate%20Pact%20-%20survey) (contact us)).
The EESC is preparing an exploratory opinion on the European Climate Pact which aims to make recommendations about how to:
- encourage information sharing and public understanding of climate action;
- create real and virtual spaces for exchange on climate;
- build capacity to facilitate grassroots initiatives, among others.
Due to the difficult situation caused by COVID-19, we will not be able to organise a public hearing. However, the rapporteur and co-rapporteur would like to invite all interested stakeholders to participate in an online consultation. The consultation period will be open for two weeks.
A net-zero emissions economy by 2050
Tackling climate and environmental challenges has become an increasingly urgent task. The EU is striving to create a prosperous, inclusive, climate resilient society with a circular, net-zero emissions economy by 2050. For this to happen, incremental changes will not be enough.
What is needed is:
- a fundamental transformation of economic, social and financial systems;
- triggering exponential change in decarbonisation rates, and
- strengthening climate resilience.
We need big thinking and big changes. The success will largely depend on the European Union’s capacity to engage with its citizens.
The 2019 Eurobarometer finds that 93% of EU citizens see climate change as a serious problem - and 79% see it as a very serious problem. The European Commission is currently consulting on a "European Climate Pact".
Timeline of the opinion
The exploratory opinion on the European Climate Pact is expected to be discussed and approved within NAT Section on 18 June and in EESC Plenary Session on 15-16 July (this calendar may change depending on the evolution of the current crisis).Do you have a question?
