On 29 June Staffan Nilsson welcomed Minister Neoklis Sylikiotis and underlined the willingness of the EESC to cooperate as much as possible with the CY Presidency
Common interests were identified namely in:
- bringing Europe closer to its citizens (increasing solidarity and social cohesion, deepening Single Market and supporting SMEs)
- bringing Europe closer to its neighbours (Northern Africa) as a way to deal with the crisis.
Mr Sylikiotos stressed his interest (and of the Presidency) in the EESC's work. The EESC is the voice of EU civil society and if we want to bring citizens to believe again in Europe we must ear their voice.
The minister mentioned that one important aspect for the Cyprus Presidency is to let the economy grow through free trade, as isolationism and protectionism are not the answers to today’s problems. He also emphasised the EU’s need to be business friendly and the role of the SMEs. Among priorities of the Cyprus presidency, he mentioned: the EU Single Market, strengthening consumers’ rights, the energy security, interconnection of resources in Europe, support to renewable energies and trade.
