Children’s rights must be placed at the centre of EU policy

Third annual EESC Prize for Organised Civil Society: European Economic and Social Committee names 2009 winners

Winners of the Civil Society Prize 2009 The selection board for the EESC Prize for Organised Civil Society agreed unanimously on this year's winners at a meeting chaired by Committee president Mario Sepi. The selection board was impressed by the quality of the applications and as a result decided to make awards to six civil society organisations. A joint first prize was therefore awarded to LIBERA international and Confindustria Sicilia (Italy). Two second prizes were awarded to two European organisations: the European Association of History Educators (EUROCLIO) and Volonteurope. Lastly, two third prizes were awarded to the Fondation Nicolas Hulot pour la Nature et l'Homme (France) and to the Austrian Federal Economic Chamber (WKO). Read more ...

EESC urges institutions to boost EU commitments to the UN Climate Change Conference in Copenhagen

The EESC has overwhelmingly adopted a draft resolution, entitled "No Turning back," for submission to the United Nations Climate Change Conference which is to be held in Copenhagen in December. The EESC also adopted several opinions reiterating its commitment on this issue.

The EESC is very concerned about climate change and is committed to the protection of the environment. To acknowledge its efforts, in 2009, the EESC was awarded three stars of the Ecodynamic Enterprise label by the Brussels Region Environment Agency. This is the highest achievable score, and it is a public recognition for the good environmental management within the Committee.
