Setting Europe on the right track towards a more circular economy starts with implementing the EU waste hierarchy to its full potential. The recent communication of the Commission on "The role of waste-to-energy in the circular economy" looks at ensuring that the recovery of energy from waste in the EU is consistent with the objectives pursued in the Circular Economy Action Plan, in particular when it comes to progressing towards higher levels of the waste hierarchy (prevention, reuse and recycling). The European Economic and Social Committee (EESC) is currently drawing up an opinion on this communication, with a view to gathering civil society organisations' views on this critical aspect of waste management. Interested stakeholders will have the opportunity to feed into this opinion during this public hearing. Discussions will be webstreamed live on this website (tab: webstream).
