  • In a joint response to the European Commission's postponement of the Water Resilience Initiative, representatives of the European Economic and Social Committee (EESC), the MEP Water Group of the European Parliament (EP) and the European Committee of the Regions (CoR) have sent an open letter to Executive Vice-President Maroš Šefčovič, asking the Commission to adopt a comprehensive approach to water and reiterating their call for an EU Blue Deal.

Le Comité économique et social européen (CESE) se félicite de la proposition présentée par la Commission concernant une stratégie européenne en matière de sécurité économique. Il souligne toutefois que l’UE doit renforcer sa compétitivité en veillant au bon fonctionnement et au parachèvement de son marché unique. Dans le même temps, il préconise d’associer les entreprises et autres acteurs concernés de la société civile de l’Union à la poursuite de l’élaboration et à la mise en œuvre de cette stratégie.

  • Microplastic pollution has emerged as a critical environmental concern, with its detrimental impact reaching far and wide across ecosystems and human health. The European Economic and Social Committee (EESC) acknowledges the urgency of addressing the issue and supports the European Commission’s proposal to regulate microplastic pellet operations and emissions.

    En janvier dernier, M. Thierry Breton, commissaire européen au marché intérieur, a réaffirmé la nécessité de consolider un marché intérieur de la défense, condition de notre sécurité. «Nous avons commencé avec les munitions pour l’Ukraine», a-t-il déclaré. «Il s’agit désormais d’élargir cette logique autour d’un programme industriel européen de défense d’ampleur capable de soutenir la remontée en puissance de la base industrielle européenne et de développer les infrastructures nécessaires à la protection des espaces contestés».

    Le Comité économique et social européen a eu l’occasion de réaffirmer, à maintes reprises, la nécessité de soutenir le lancement d’un programme européen de développement industriel dans le domaine de la défense (EDIDP), qui vise à créer un dispositif interopérationnel et intégré de défense commune.

  • A group of TEN Section members was sent in a study visit to the European Maritime Safety Agency (EMSA) on 1 February 2024. A very fruitful and interesting discussion took place on the EESC opinions on the Maritime Safety Package adopted in September 2023, the decarbonization of maritime transport, and working conditions of seafarers.

  • The EESC believes in the firm principle that all prisoners shall be treated with the respect due to their inherent dignity and value as human beings.
