The third visit of the "5 ideas for a younger Europe" initiative: University of Calabria
On 21 November 2011 the first vice-president of the European Parliament, Gianni Pittella, and the vice-president of the European Economic and Social Committee, Anna Maria Darmanin visited the University of Calabria. This visit which was the third in the "5 ideas for a younger Europe" initiative, received wide attention from the Italian media.
Around 300 students had gathered to share their concerns and ideas about Europe with the two vice-presidents. The Italian students raised important issues like the marginalization of some regions in Europe and employment for young people. They debated the difficulties citizens have in accessing the political institutions and understanding bureaucracy and how media can play an important role in reducing this distance. Other topics that were discussed were how to encourage active citizenship in Europe and the current financial crisis.
