Economics and politics of airport expansion in Europe

Clearly, the presence of an airport in a region makes the region more prestigious, creates jobs and may have an impact on inward investment decisions. Yet the existence of many airports in overlapping catchment areas is evidence of shortcomings in resource allocation, leads to an increase in CO2 emissions, creates artificial demand and has a negative influence on the development of alternative modes of transport
