The EESC President is in Rabat with an EESC delegation to attend the Moroccan Economic and Social Council's plenary session.

19 Jul 2012

Yesterday the EESC delegation met Moroccan Prime Minister, Mr Abdelilah Benkirane, as well as the President of the Chamber of Advisers, Mr Mohamed Cheikh Biadillah. President Nilsson advocated for civil society involvement in national policy-making.

The previous visit by the Moroccan ESC President with a delegation of members to the EESC at the beginning of March 2012 provided an opportunity to compare notes on the challenges faced by the two bodies and to meet with the European Commissioner responsible for Enlargement and European Neighbourhood Policy, Štefan Füle.

As a follow up, today the EESC has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Moroccan ESC. It is important for both the EESC and the Moroccan Economic and Social Council to remain open to and aware of developments in civil society as a whole in order to be able to continue to reflect the concerns of society.

Thus, following the signing of the Memorandum of Understanding the EESC foresees exchanges of information and mutual support in a number of areas. The memorandum reflects what we have already been doing together over the past year, and there is also a proposal to hold joint seminars on subjects of common interest to be added to our portfolio of cooperation in the future.

The EESC has emphasised the importance of involving Moroccan civil society, and in particular the ESC, in the relationship between the EU and Morocco.
