The forum that gathered 100 organisations to discuss the field of integration of third-country nationals in the EU was actually the first meeting organised after establishment of the Lisbon Treaty. Therefore the forum was at the same time an implementation of the new role of participatory democracy (established in the Lisbon Treaty) into practice. I am very pleased that our forum was supported by attendance of the European Commissioner for Home Affairs - Cecilia Malmström and that sharing common ideas of our committee and European Commission in the integration field was enhanced with further cooperation. Eduction to combat social exclusion
After months of preparations, I can proudly say that it was a pleasure to hold three intense days (20-22/05/2010) of our Biennial Conference in Florence, at the Istituto degli Innocenti. The choice of 'Education to combat social exclusion' brought the social dimension in the broadest sense into the whole event and it enhanced the dialogue between civil society and participating organisations and institutions... 461st plenary session
At the EESC Plenary this week a very interesting and inspiring debate took place on how to practically develop and enhance participatory democracy. I was very pleased to welcome guest speakers Libor Roucek and Isabelle Durant, vice-presidents of the European Parliament, as well as Martin Mansergh, member of the Irish Parliament and last but not least Maros Sevcovic, vice-president of the European Commission responsible for inter-institutional relations and administration. Following the very warm welcome by President Barroso at the European Commission's premises, at the Berlaymont Building, the conversation between the two Presidents focused on the economic issues concerning goals and urgent need to fulfil the EU2020 Strategy. President Sepi presented his point of view linked with the Commission's recent document on the EU2020 strategy, stressing that more ambitious proposals are needed to overcome the current crisis and to re-launch the economy, in order to achieve a prosperous, social and green future¨ for Europe.
