Europe's borders are open and an increasing number of people now work, do business, travel or live in another EU country. The EU intends to make life easier for these people by creating a European area of justice, which would offer practical solutions to the cross-borders problems faced by EU citizens when they move around the EU.

More specifically, this would mean respecting the fundamental rights of all EU citizens, ensuring their equal treatment, protecting their personal data throughout the whole EU and guaranteeing access to justice should they encounter legal difficulties anywhere in the EU. The European area of justice would also ensure protection and support in cases where EU citizens fall victim to crime, guarantee their right to a fair trial if they are charged with a crime and help resolve civil issues in cross-border situations.
