Now more than ever, Europe needs industry and industry needs Europe. The Single Market, with 500 million consumers, 220 million workers and 20 million entrepreneurs, offers a key opportunity to achieve a competitive and sustainable industrial Europe. One in four jobs in the private sector in the EU is in the manufacturing industry, and at least another one in four is in associated services that depend on industry as either a supplier or client. Four-fifths of all private-sector research and development takes place in industry – it drives innovation and provides solutions to the challenges confronting our societies.
A healthy industrial sector is crucial to Europe’s recovery from the crisis. So the EESC welcomed the European Commission’s 2014 Communication calling for a European Industrial Renaissance, and continues to support the sector through its Consultative Commission on Industrial Change (CCMI).
