Trade and Sustainability

Public debate EESC, VMA 3 meeting room, Brussels, Belgium

Trade can support development by opening new markets, increasing access to products and services, creating jobs and stimulating innovation. At the same time, trade activities can deplete natural resources, and lower environmental protection and social standards. Therefore, trade policy and agreements should integrate environmental and social sustainability.

In line with its conclusions from the February conference on the Post-2015 Framework, the EESC and its Sustainable Development Observatory is now asking the following questions:

  • Is EU trade policy coherent with the EU sustainable development objectives?
  • Does it provide for high levels of consumer protection, environmental and social standards?
  • Is civil society properly involved in the development and implementation of trade agreements?
  • What are the risks and opportunities created by the current negotiations on the Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership (TTIP)?

The EESC Sustainable Development Observatory will debate on these topics with representatives from the European Commission, trade unions, NGOs and think-tanks on 2 April 2014 at 9:30-13:00.

Venue: EESC Meeting room VMA 3, rue Van Maerlantstraat, 2 - 1040 Brussels. Map
