Bringing Rio Home - Rio+20 Debriefing Session

EESC, Brussels, Belgium

The European Economic and Social Committee has sustainable development as one of its key priorities.

It has been very actively preparing the Rio+20 Conference since 2010, with conferences, hearings, opinions, involvement of European civil society networks and organizations, and dialogue with civil society outside the EU.

The EESC was present in Rio, with a delegation led by President Staffan Nilsson and integrated in the EU delegation. You will find key information about our activities in Rio and our main messages  here.

The road from Rio is as important as the road to Rio. Coming back from Rio the EESC wants to take Rio home and contribute to the implementation of Rio results and discussions, in particular in the European Union. The EESC Sustainable Development Observatory organized a public Rio-debriefing meeting "Bringing Rio home" on 5 July.

The meeting will has consisted of four panels, respectively on:

  • EU Sustainable Development Strategy after Rio
  • Effective civil society involvement
  • Sustainable Development Goals
  • Social Dimension of Sustainable Development

Panellists came from think tanks, social partners, environment and development NGOs, and Sustainability Councils.

This de-briefing session will input into the thematic EESC plenary debate "Bringing Rio home" on 11 July 2012 with Janez Potocnik (European Commissioner for Environment), Laurence Tubiana (Director IDDRI Paris) and Olivier Consolo (Director CONCORD).
