Overcoming the crisis - Towards a policy programme for sustainable recovery Extraordinary joint meeting of the ECO and SOC Sections and the Europe 2020 Steering Committee
The financial crisis in Europe has profound consequences both for economic and social stability in general and for the economic governance and social solidarity of the EU structure as a whole. This is why the Bureau of the European Economic and Social Committee decided to convene an extraordinary joint meeting of the ECO and SOC Sections and our Europe 2020 Steering Committee in order thoroughly to assess the situation, update and re-focus on what the EU must do to alleviate the crisis and restore growth, stability and cohesion. - -
5th meeting of the EU-Brazil Civil Society Round Table
The European Economic and Social Committee (EESC) and the Brazilian Council for Economic and Social Development (CDES) have held their 5th meeting of the European Union – Brazil Civil Society Round Table in Porto (Portugal), on 7-9 November 2011. Their work has aimed at contributing to the next United Nations conference on sustainable development (Rio de Janeiro, June 2012). -
Building a dynamic national, regional and local engagement in the fight against poverty
After Lisbon, the second study visit planned as follow-up to the opinion SOC/405 on the "European Platform against Poverty and Social Exclusion" brought Maureen O'Neill (rapporteur and member of Group III), Brenda King (Group I) and Daiva Kvedaraite (Group II) to Copenhagen. -
Protect children against sexual abuse - Online database available now! Press Breakfast
On 27 October the European Economic and Social Committee launched an online database of best practices for the protection of children against sexual abuse.
The examples of best practices have been collected from across Europe and showcase the work of NGOs and government agencies which have set up hotlines or launched awareness campaigns for children in schools, on the internet or on TV and which can serve as a vital tool for combating child abuse.
This initiative ties in with the new EESC opinion on "Preventive measures for the protection of children against sexual abuse" drafted by Madi Sharma (Member of the Employers' Group) and adopted at the EESC October plenary session. - -
Plenary session 26-27 october 2011 475th Plenary Session - József Antall Building (European Parliament), Room JAN 2Q2
475th plenary session with the participation of the Vice-President of the Commission Siim Kallas and the Commissioner Dacian Cioloş. The plenary started with one minutes silence to commemorate former President Mario Sepi. -
