EESC opinion: Social Investment Package Adopted References: CESE 1557/2013 - SOC/481 Referral - COM(2013) 83 final Rapporteur: Röpke (Workers - GR II / Austria) Plenary Session: 490 - 22 May 2013 - 23 May 2013 (Summary Plenary Session) The EESC welcomes as such the Commission's Social Investment Package and the shift in approach it represents. However, the EESC considers that the question of financing remains largely unanswered. Better use of the European structural and investment funds and the best possible targeting of the measures are certainly to be welcomed, but will certainly not be enough to achieve the desired policy shift. -

Special emphasis must be placed on empowering, informing and educating children, families and teachers. The EESC calls on advertisers and sponsors to adopt and apply the highest levels of protection of children's rights. -

EESC opinion: Preventive measures for the protection of children against sexual abuse Adopted References: CESE 1593/2011 - SOC/412 Own-initiative Rapporteur: Ms Madi Sharma (Employers - GR I / United Kingdom) Plenary Session: 475 - 26 Oct 2011 - 27 Oct 2011 (Summary Plenary Session) The aim of this additional opinion is to put forward some examples or recommendations for prevention, insufficiently addressed in the new proposed directive on combating the sexual abuse of children. Preventive measures should be holistic, child-centred and happen as early as possible. The EESC calls on the European Commission to adopt and enforce a European Union Prevention Strategy Against Child Sexual Abuse. There are also many excellent initiatives of civil society actors to be endorsed. To that end the EESC has produced a database of best practice. -
